To: Dental Professionals, radiation protection specialists, and other individuals or organizations concerned with radiation safety procedures, x-ray equipment performance and radiation protection in dentistry.

Health Canada is seeking your comments on proposed revisions to Safety Code 30 - Radiation Protection in Dentistry - Recommended Safety Procedures for the Use of Dental X-Ray Equipment (hereinafter referred to as Safety Code 30).

The last updates to Safety Code 30 were published in 2000.   Since then, there have been technological advancements in dental radiography.  Updates to Safety Code 30 are needed in order to reflect new dental x-ray technologies, recent amendments to Canadian regulatory requirements applicable to dental x-ray equipment, and modern radiation protection practices.

In May of 2018, amendments to the Radiation Emitting Devices Regulations, Schedule II, Part II (Dental X-ray Equipment) came into force.  The updated regulations set out requirements applicable to the construction, functioning and labelling of equipment to enhance the radiation protection of dental x-ray equipment operators and patients.   While the Regulations apply to the importation, sale, lease and advertising of dental x-ray equipment in Canada, Safety Code 30 provides guidance on radiation protection to help support the safe installation and use of these devices.

Anticipated Consultation Outcomes

Our goal in updating Safety Code 30 is to provide a user-centred safety code that provides up-to-date radiation safety guidance for all individuals and organizations that are concerned with radiation safety in dentistry.

The proposed updated Safety Code 30 is attached below.  We welcome all comments on the technical contents of the Safety Code, its overall organization and its ease of use.  In addition, we are seeking input on specific sections of the proposed document, highlighted in the attached document, that represent important changes and additions to the Safety Code.

For your reference, the current version of Safety Code 30 (2000) is available online.
