Monica Hira, Radiation Oncology Physicist, Cross Cancer Institute, Edmonton, AB

What is your most gratifying experience as a medical physicist? I like the fact that I can directly apply my physics knowledge to help patients. When I got into Physics after my high school, I didn’t know I could apply Physics in such a practical and direct way. I was thinking more of theoretical stuff.

Who was your role model as an aspiring student and why? My dad was my role model. He was a very honest individual and was very caring for everybody around. He was also was one of the most regarded person in our family and local community. He also had a doctorate degree which kind of inspired me to work toward one too.

What is your favourite food? Lemon and peanut rice, with yogurt.

Who is your favourite action hero and why? None

What was your second career choice, after Medical Physics? Wall Street type financial firms hire quite a few Physicists for financial models and trading algorithms development. One of my friends, a physics graduate, did go and work on Wall Street and at one point I was thinking of doing the same.
